Finished Deltarune chapter 3, gonna play ch 4 tomorrow cos I think that's what Toby recommended? Anyway some random thoughts/emotions/theories below the cut, proper review to come when I've finished chapter 4 it turned into a proper review lol

(also no ch 4 spoilers in comments pls!)

  • Is the knight thing that took Toriel Dess? Or maybe Rudy? Not super likely and mostly based on the horns + I was randomly thinking about Noelle when they turned up
  • Also, weird that Noelle seems not to have been mentioned at all in this chapter - wonder if that's a consequence of Toby having to write around Snowgrave, but trying to work around diverging routes by ignoring them isn't Toby's style
  • Also Undyne!! The music when she turned up didn't sound like her at first but it became more familiar as it went on, not sure what it's reminding me of
  • Speaking of music, even if you didn't know the Word Of Toby saying that Mike was part of Spamton's backstory, Tenna's boss music (+ also the 'heart on a string' in one of the boss minigames) makes it really obvious that him and Spamton are connected
  • Overall Tenna seems like a combination of Mettaton and Spamton, I think I like him but I'm not super obsessed with him - can easily see why someone(/Tumblr) could tho
  • His boss fight was HARD, easily took half a dozen tries i think
  • The cooking/serving minigame was also really tough, took me like 4 or 5 tries and even then only by the skin of my teeth, mostly cos I kept getting the controls mixed up
  • Reappearance in Tenna boss fight was super easy though, by far the easiest of the minigames in that fight
  • Rhythm game was also fun and pretty easy, took me like two tries. I wanna look up the lyrics to the song cos the little I caught was a wild mix of silly and serious
  • I guess this is turning into a review so quick speed round of the things I didn't like:
  • I was probably kinda getting my hopes up but I wish Elnina/Lanino/Rouxles had stayed together
  • The format of boards 1 and 2 wasn't bad per se but it was kinda weird and it was a relief to go back to something more normal for 3 - do like how it furthered the Themes tho, in particular I'm thinking of the bit where everyone swaps controllers and so Kris (and by extension, the player) is controlling someone else/someone else is controlling Kris
  • Also there really needs to be save points in them - my laptop died right after my first attempt at the rhythm game so I had to replay the whole of board 2
  • aaaand finally Toby isn't really the kind of guy who would do this + as I said I do like the character but it sorta seems like Tenna is trying to recapture Spamton's popularity? Though now that I've written that down it kinda seems like it might be the case in-universe/there's some other in-universe explanation for that but idk if/how much it'll ever come up in game
  • Okay back to speculation/positivity but I kinda get the vibe that Ralsei isn't gonna be a player character in chapter 4, mainly from the trailer bit + something about the end bit in the LIght World? IDK how to explain it
  • Oh yeah I think I'll have to rewatch the ending cutscne (specifically Susie's speech to Tenna) cos my audio cut out for some of it + when trying to fix that I accidentally skipped a few textboxes
  • aaaand addressing the beginning at the end - the start hit me with Susie/Ralsei feels (note to self, reblog some art of them when I'm done with chapter 4), but I was also hit with Ralsei/Susie/Kris feels which suprised me cos I wasn't into the ship from ch 1+2 and yet all of a sudden I was?? not complaining tho, new ship acquired I guess lol
  • I don't think I ship it as a triad tho, I think Susie dates Kris and Ralsei and Ralsei has an unrequited crush on Kris
  • Other ships aquired: Rouxles/Westherpeople (as mentioned above), Tenna/Mettaton, maybe Tenna/Spamton
  • OH YEAH Rouxles is confirmed bi and poly, happy pride
  • Also one of the quizzes confimed Kris' last name as Dreemur, before I was one of the "well it's not explicitly stated" people but now that it has been I'm now wondering why I thought that/why their AO3 canonical isn't listed as that? Either way that tag's gonna have to be updated
  • I think the secret boss was found by sailing for a really long time to the left and up in board 2, and Susie might be the victim of this chpater's Weird Rout if there is one (due to the aftermentioned contoller swapping), but otherwise I have No Idea who/what they might be I wouldn't be very surprised if I'm wrong
  • uhhh I guess that's it, see you tomorrow or the day after for chapter 4 yelling
  • EDIT forgot a thing: Ralsei’s description of the nature of darkeners at the start REALLY reminded me of the lyrics of Don’t Forget/the credit music
  • Also, per TV Tropes: “ This chapter's Superboss fight is the mandatory Hopeless Boss Fight against the Roaring Knight that occurs at the chapter's climax, meaning that the player has to fight the overpowered enemy, unlike the first two being optional in areas you had to double-back to fully unlock. That said, assuming you aren't possessed of godlike reflexes or Save Scumming to get the hang of the Knight's attacks, you still need to defeat another secret but easier boss to unlock the Shadow Mantle, which makes it possible to win the fight, albeit, with much difficulty...just not defeat the knight.”

I had a great time yesterday, after me and my friend had lunch and went swimming we decided to spend the rest of the day together instead of my going to the piano thing and we met her boyfriend (who I'm also friends with) for drinks and then went to their place for a great dinner and hung out and had a wonderful evening.

I really hate to give up on a book, but sometimes, there are too many other tempting things on the horizon to keep ploughing through an active read in the hopes it gets better. Today I put aside Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling. While I would have liked to have gone all the way to the end before making a judgement, there just over 9 hours still to go on the audiobook and the book has simply not given me enough to power through that.

At nearly 9 hours in (about halfway) my overall feeling towards this book is indifference. Towards the plot, towards the characters, towards the setting. It's very generic fantasy and just doesn't give much to bite onto outside of that. The first half of the plot has some fun adventure elements, but when the mentor-figure, Seregil, becomes incapacitated partway through, the youthful protagonist Alec is simply not enough to carry the story. The second half of the story is more political intrigue, and I can't help but compare it to The Traitor Baru Cormorant which I'm also currently reading, and that comparison does Luck in the Shadows no favors.

Seregil and Alec's escapades are fun, and it's interesting to see the creative ways they go about their tasks, but for me it's not enough to make up for the lackluster plot and detailed but unremarkable worldbuilding.

There's a disappointing dearth of women in the story, although one of the fantasy kingdoms in which the second half of the story takes place has been ruled by a succession of queens for centuries. There is some casual queerness in the story which I liked, but when I looked for more reviews on this to help me decide if it was worth pressing on, I learned (SPOILER) that Alec and Seregil become a couple later on. Given that Alec is barely sixteen at the start of this book, and Seregil is a middle-aged man, I'm just not here for it.

This is the first book of a series (the Nightrunner series), but my general feeling on series is that it's a cop-out to rely on later books to make up for weaknesses in earlier books. Particularly here, where each book gets longer, the author is asking for me to take a lot on trust that this story will get better with time.

I really wanted to like this book, as I really want to like all fantasy novels, but it's just not worth the amount of time investment needed. Also, in general, not looking for stories about adults falling in love with teenagers. Disappointing, but there are other things to move on to.

Reading
  • Read some more on Lirael by Garth Nix. Love this book <3
  • I started listening to In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire (Wayward Children #4). Lundy wasn't a character I was particularly interested in before, but I'm enjoying this so far. Plus, I am a sucker for a Goblin Market!
  • Ficwise, I've been reading/rereading a bunch of Mission: Impossible fic, specifically Will/Ethan. Lots of fun, and I'm happy that I've already found several good fics I hadn't read before.
Watching
  • The roommate and I want to see the new Mission: Impossible movie that just came out in theaters, so we decided to rewatch all the previous movies. So much fun, love these movies! We've made it through Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible 2, Mission: Impossible III, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (my favorite! also the first one I watched, all for Jeremy Renner lol), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (the roommate's favorite), and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. All that's left is Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, which neither of us have seen before.
  • AEW as usual. Mostly bummed this week about some releases, particularly Abadon not being renewed when their contract is up. Hopefully they'll do some more GCW, that'd be nice.
Listening
  • Nothing.
Writing
  • I finished up my [community profile] idproquo assignment, I think. There's still some potential to flesh out the ending some more, depending on how I feel this week.
  • For my goal of writing a fic for every book I read this year, I wrote a fic for You and Me and the Airbnb by Rena Butler.
  • The roommate and I went to a queer writers event at the library and one of the panels we went to was a workshop on love poetry. I wrote a poem during that.
  • Submitted some poetry to a lit mag.

Had a great time yesterday with L., I miss them already.
I have been wasting time trying to make appointments with physical therapy over the phone, they never answer the phone, I leave messages, they never call back, I had to go to their office earlier this morning and even then I couldn't get an appointment for over a week and then I couldn't get enough of them. I used to book them for a two month block of time but apparently they won't let anybody do that anymore.
I burned the shit out of my thumb trying to make a hard boiled egg because the oven glove had a hole in it. I put some aloe vera gel on the burn but it didn't seem to help it much.
The scammer cretins are playing games with the phone again. They seem to have dropped the fake accident crap and are now claiming to be with the electric company.

Recent Reading: The Twilight Zone

Last night I finished The Twilight Zone by Nona Fernandez, book #9 from the "Women in Translation" rec list. This book was translated from Spanish by Natasha Wimmer.

The Twilight Zone is a nonfiction book, part memoir, part investigative journalism piece by Fernandez, first published in 2016. It concerns Fernandez's study of and memories of growing up under the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. The author is haunted by the traumas of the regime, both those she experienced firsthand and those she heard about from others, and the book in some ways feels like an exercise in simply trying to reconcile those feelings.

Fernandez's book is of course very specific to the Chilean experience, and yet core parts of her incisive commentary about both the absurdity and the cruelty of autocracies rings true around the world. The exercises the regime goes through in its constant quest for self-preservation are both ridiculous and brutal, feelings Fernandez captures in her title. The surrealist sci-fi hit show of the 70s fits very well as a metaphor for the often-flailing yet eminently dangerous police state.

Fernandez does an excellent job of using her prose to say things not neatly spelled out in words. I was reminded of reading The Things They Carried in high school, and how revelatory it seemed to me at the time how the author could use the style of prose to suggest a character's mental disarrangement without simply saying he was deranged. Fernandez's prose stood out to me in a similar way—how she uses the structure of her words to capture the feelings at play.

Equally compelling is the obviously copious amounts of research Fernandez put into her work. She portrays herself as a woman consumed by a quest to find answers about this regime, and it comes across in her work. Names, dates, places, timelines — Fernandez has clearly put in the leg work to piece together the final days of the highlighted victims of the regime as much as can be done.

However, the book never comes across like a textbook. Fernandez ably weaves her research into a compelling narrative. Neither does she ever seek to blur the line between the facts and her imagination—she keeps a clean line between what she knows and what she wonders, or imagines. Nevertheless, the questions and suppositions that populate Fernandez's mind feel regrettably natural for anyone in the aggravating circumstances of a mendacious autocracy. She does an excellent job of showing how crazy-making it is to live under such a government, where you are constantly being lied to in direct contradiction of visible facts, and yet there seems to be nothing you can do but either accept the truth or taste the knuckles of the regime.

I really enjoyed this read. It breezed by and I can absolutely see what a national treasure Fernandez is as a writer! I would love to see if more of her work has been translated into English; she has a wonderful voice.

Country: USA
Subscription/Access Policy: I probably average 18-36 posts per month. I post some unlocked things, but I have two locked filters as well (one for everyone friended to my journal, and the other tends to be locked to people I've known for years who actively converse with me, i.e. people I trust with private info), somethings I post privately, mostly recipes that I'm not sure will interest other people.
What I chat about: I am very chatty (seriously - just look at this post as an example)! I enjoy dialogue. Mostly, I chat about writing, and cats would be my guess. I also chat about whatever is on my mind at the moment. So, yeah, you never know. It could be fitness, stores, items, a show I've watched, or current events (Poli-chat is rare and tends to be LOCKED). I will say, although I am an Independent, I am NOT a fan of what's going on in my country at this time. Anyone who supports the felon need not apply. Seriously, just no.
I'm looking to connect with people who: Enjoy chatting, seriously, I'm very chatty and love good dialogue. Also, people who love cats, NCIS, and other common interests. I tend to mirror people. I'm generally pretty engaged with those who engage with me. I'm okay with lurkers, but I'm less likely to comment to people who never comment on my journal. Just being honest. It doesn't mean I'm not reading or don't care, but I've had a lot of negative experiences with one-sided relationships in my life. But yeah, if you want to innocently lurk, then lurk, it's fine. If you want to chit-chat, then feel free to comment. I started on LJ in 2004, and have online friends I've known for years, who are from several different countries. I enjoy learning about history, other countries, and cultures. Unfortunately, so many people have left LJ over the years, and not all of them have found their way to DW.

Had some English Tea No. 1 this morning and watched a bunch of Rick and Morty eps and a couple of Boardwalk Empire eps and talked to a friend who is having problems dealing with her dickhead boss at work so to cheer her up I asked her if she wanted to have lunch and go swimming with me Wednesday afternoon. I'm also going to have drinks and listen to somebody play piano Wednesday evening so that's going to be an interesting day. Tonight I'm going to this cool Italian restaurant in my neighborhood to have some pasta and wine.
